Patients often search by condition, not by procedure name. If you have been told you have one of these conditions, this is the page to understand what surgery in India looks like for you. Each condition maps to a specific procedure or set of procedures above.

Why International Patients Choose India for Joint Surgery
India performs more than 250,000 joint replacements every year. A significant share comes from international patients. Four practical reasons why that number keeps growing. Source: Indian Journal of Orthopaedics.

High surgical volume, including cases other countries turn away
Senior surgeons at India’s top hospitals regularly handle failed replacements done abroad, severe deformities, advanced rheumatoid cases, and patients who have been waiting years. That exposure changes how they plan complex cases.
In our experience guiding international patients since 2017, this surgical volume is the most common reason patients from Australia, Fiji, and Nigeria feel confident booking.

The implants are the same brands as the UK and Australia
This is the fear we hear most often. The answer is direct: Indian private hospitals do not use local implants for international patients. The standard options are Stryker, Zimmer Biomet, DePuy Synthes (Johnson & Johnson), and Smith+Nephew.
Your implant brand and model is named in your written estimate before you fly. Not after. Before.

Surgery happens in weeks, not months
NHS wait time for routine knee replacement was over 12 months as of 2025 (NHS England RTT data). Ontario and British Columbia provincial waitlists for elective hip or knee surgery regularly exceed 11 months (Ontario Wait Times).
At our partner hospitals the schedule is straightforward: share reports, written estimate in 24 hours, fly in, surgery within 7 to 14 days of landing.

Recovery is easier than most patients expect
Major Indian medical hubs have serviced apartments, international hotels, physiotherapy centres within walking distance of every major hospital, English-speaking staff at every level, and Western, continental, halal, and African food options.
For a knee or hip replacement, you spend 4 to 7 nights in the hospital and the remaining 14 days in a hotel. You walk home on a cane.
Why Delhi NCR is the most practical entry point
Three of the six hospitals listed below are within 35 minutes of Indira Gandhi International Airport.
- Multiple JCI hospitals within 15 km
- Second opinions are 20 minutes away
- Direct flights from most patient-source countries
- Large stock of serviced apartments and hotels

The waitlist and private cost problem

India offers the same imported implants and JCI hospital standards at a fraction of the price, with surgery scheduled in two weeks.

Travel and Logistics
Our partner hospitals are within 50 minutes of an international airport (IGI Delhi, BOM Mumbai, MAA Chennai, BLR Bangalore). You travel on an Indian e-Medical Visa (eMED), applied online, typically issued in 4 working days. A companion may travel on the e-Medical Attendant Visa (eMED-X).
You pay the hospital directly. Here is how it works.
Most patients ask this before anything else. The answer is straightforward.
- You pay the hospital directly. Not us. Your payment goes to the hospital’s billing desk.
- The hospital pays us a referral fee from within their existing pricing structure. Your bill is not marked up to cover our fee.
- You are free to contact the hospital directly at any point. We will not hide that option from you.
- The written estimate you receive comes from the hospital, on hospital letterhead. We do not generate or alter quotes.
- If you decide not to proceed after the first call, there is no charge and no pressure.
Wheuppl Medsol Pvt Ltd is a medical tourism facilitator based in Gurugram since 2017. We are not a hospital. We do not provide medical treatment.
What If Something Goes Differently?
Three honest answers to the three questions that stop most international patients from booking.
What if the doctor changes the diagnosis after I land?
You get a second opinion at no cost from another senior surgeon at the same or a different partner hospital. You are not obliged to proceed. If you decide to fly home without surgery, any deposit is refunded minus actual costs incurred such as the consult fee and any imaging done.
What if I need to stay longer than planned?
Hotels and serviced apartments allow daily extension. We help you extend your visa at the local FRRO office if needed. Additional hospital and physiotherapy costs are at the published rate with no surprise add-ons.
What if there is a complication after I fly home?
Your operating surgeon remains your medical point of contact. We coordinate remote consultation for 12 months post-surgery. If a corrective procedure requires returning to India, we help re-arrange. Your discharge package includes operative notes and implant details in writing.
Frequently Asked Questions
The ten questions international patients ask most before booking joint surgery in India.
Is joint replacement surgery in India safe for international patients?
Yes, at accredited private hospitals. Two accreditations to verify:
- JCI (Joint Commission International). Same body that accredits US and UK hospitals. Searchable at jointcommissioninternational.org.
- NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals). India’s national standard. Searchable at nabh.co.
All hospitals on this page hold one or both. Surgical site infection rates at JCI hospitals in India are in the same range as US and UK private hospitals for joint replacement.
Which city in India is best for joint replacement surgery?
For most international patients, Delhi NCR (Gurugram and south Delhi) is the most practical entry point. Three JCI hospitals within 35 minutes of IGI Airport, direct flights from most patient-source countries. Chennai (Apollo) is strong for hip surgery and is preferred by patients from the Middle East and Africa. Mumbai (Kokilaben, Lilavati) and Bangalore (Manipal) are equally strong but have different travel logistics. We help you decide based on your home airport and case.
How long should I stay in India after knee or hip replacement?
Plan 21 days for a single joint replacement. Bilateral cases need 25 to 28 days. Revision surgery needs 28 to 30 days. Most of that time is in a hotel, not the hospital. You fly home walking with a cane.
Which implants are used for joint replacement in India?
Stryker (USA), Zimmer Biomet (USA), DePuy Synthes by Johnson & Johnson (USA), and Smith+Nephew (UK). Same brands as the UK and Australia. Your surgeon selects the specific model based on bone quality, age, weight, and activity level. Brand and model is named in your written estimate before you fly.
Is robotic knee replacement better than conventional surgery?
Robotic-assisted systems like MAKO and Cuvis help the surgeon plan and execute implant alignment more precisely. Published data shows slightly better alignment accuracy and faster early recovery. Long-term outcomes at 10 to 15 years are still being studied. Typically costs USD 1,500 to 2,500 more than conventional. Worth discussing with your surgeon based on your specific anatomy and activity goals.
Can I walk before I fly home?
Yes. Most patients walk with a walker by day 2, a cane by day 7 to 10, and independently for short distances by day 14 to 21. You fly home with a cane or crutches. Most airlines accept this. You need a medical fitness-to-fly certificate from your surgeon, which we arrange.
Will physiotherapy be arranged for me in India?
In-hospital physiotherapy from day 1 is included in the surgery package. After discharge, daily outpatient physiotherapy is arranged at a clinic near your hotel. Cost is typically USD 15 to 25 per session. After you return home, online video physiotherapy with an Indian therapist can be arranged if useful.
What happens if I have a complication after I return home?
Your operating surgeon remains your medical point of contact. We coordinate online consultations for 12 months at no additional cost. If a corrective procedure requires returning to India, we help re-arrange. Your discharge package includes operative notes, implant details, and a surgeon letter for your home-country doctor in English.
Do I need a special visa to come to India for joint replacement?
Yes. You need an Indian e-Medical Visa (eMED), applied online at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Processing is typically 3 to 5 working days. You need a hospital invitation letter, which we arrange after your estimate is issued. Companions travel on the e-Medical Attendant Visa (eMED-X).
How do I verify a hospital is genuinely JCI-accredited before I travel?
Go to JCI’s public directory, search India, filter by hospital. Do not rely on hospital websites or facilitator claims alone. JCI accreditation must appear in the JCI directory with a current accreditation date. We link to the JCI directory listing for each hospital on our hospital profile pages.
